10/11/98 Pack Put down P-Bruins in Home Opener ZAC CHAMP The Pack showed up ready to play last night in front of a crowd of 10,641 anxious fans as they took on the Providence Bruins. The Pack were just as impressive as the fireworks that started another year of Hartford hockey, scoring two goals within the first 5 minutes of play. Vladimir Vorobiev notched goal number one his first of the season at 1:12 of the first period, assisted by Marc Savard, and Derek Armstrong. At 4:31 NHL veteran Bill Berg scored, assisted by Ken Gernander and Adam Smith. Bill is one of the 17 NHLrs to report to the Wolf Pack. The third goal of the period and 2nd of the game for Vorobiev came during a Wolf Pack power play at 11:38 assisted once again by Marc Savard new comer Jeff Brown. The final goal of the period came at 19:48 by Johan Witehall unassisted, this was Johans first appearance in the Hartford Civic Center, after playing last season with the Swedish Elite. Hartford got sloppy during the second, and the P-Bruins took advantage of this while on the power play. This is when Kay Whitmore stepped up, showing what he could really do. EJ Maguire had this to say about Kays performance "It could have been 4-4 or Providence with the lead. Kay Whitmore won us a game." The Bruins peppered Kay with 12 shots while on the power play during the second. Kay only allowed one goal during the game, a power play goal to Douney at 17:56 The third period gave Pack fans one more time to cheer, as Derek Armstrong scored his third of the season at 14:47, assisted by Vorobiev and Savard. It was a perfect finish to a perfect home opener, MSG wouldnt have wanted it any other way.
